The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has announced that the public is legally allowed to record police officers while they are on duty. Issuing a statement to all officers, he emphasized that such recordings are not illegal and can be used as evidence in both criminal and civil cases under national law.
This directive follows an incident in Wariyapola, where a police officer reportedly threatened an individual for filming former Minister Lohan Ratwatte’s vehicle after it was involved in an accident. Minister of Public Security Vijitha Herath condemned the officer’s actions, affirming that citizens have the right to record such situations.
“He was clearly seen threatening a man who had recorded the vehicle, which is inappropriate. A police officer has no authority to do that, as every individual has the right to film such incidents,” Minister said.
Acting IGP Weerasooriya reiterated this stance, underscoring the public’s right to document police actions without fear of reprisal.
