The Supreme Court has allowed Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to be included as a respondent in a petition contesting the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Young Journalists' Association filed a petition, arguing that Tennakoon's appointment is unconstitutional.

The petition was heard before a panel of justices, including Justices Preethi Padman Surasena and Janak de Silva.

During the hearing, President's Counsel Saliya Peiris, representing the petitioners, stated that Wickremesinghe, no longer holding presidential immunity, could be named in the case. The court accepted this reasoning and granted permission to name him as a respondent.

Previously, the Supreme Court reviewed this petition along with seven related petitions, issuing an interim order on July 24 that prevents Tennakoon from serving as IGP until the hearings are completed.
