The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is set to present a comprehensive report on Sri Lanka's rice and paddy stock levels to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today (October 28).
This assessment follows a presidential directive in response to recent shortages in staple rice varieties, including nadu, white, and red raw rice, which have impacted markets across the country.
The CAA’s investigation included extensive inspections in major rice-producing regions, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, and Hambantota. During these inspections over the weekend, CAA officers visited both large and medium-scale rice mills, where they assessed inventory levels, storage conditions, and overall availability. The officers also engaged with mill workers and suppliers to gain insights into distribution and supply chain challenges affecting rice availability.
This report aims to help the government better understand the current supply landscape, supporting decisions to address the shortages and stabilize rice prices. The findings could potentially lead to new policies or interventions to streamline distribution and improve rice availability nationwide.
