Sri Lanka Police have announced heightened security measures in the Arugam Bay Area following reports of potential threats to tourists.

Approximately 500 police officers and Special Task Force (STF) personnel have been deployed to boost security in the popular tourist destination. Intelligence agencies and other security forces are also working to strengthen safety in the region, according to the police spokesperson.

Police Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa noted that Israeli tourists frequently visit the Arugam Bay and Pottuvil areas for surfing, and recent intelligence has suggested a possible threat targeting them.

He further clarified that no intelligence reports have indicated similar threats in Colombo or other parts of the country and urged the public not to be unnecessarily alarmed.

Earlier today (23rd October), The U.S. Embassy in Colombo issued a strong advisory for its citizens to steer clear of the Arugam Bay Area until further notice, citing credible threats of potential attacks on popular tourist spots in the region.

The Embassy stated it has received reliable information regarding these threats. Consequently, a travel restriction has been imposed on Embassy personnel for Arugam Bay, effective immediately and until further notice.

The security alert from the U.S. Embassy emphasizes that U.S. citizens should exercise caution and avoid the Arugam Bay Area during this time.
