In a bold move to modernize Sri Lanka's administrative systems, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced a new initiative aimed at advancing the country's digital transformation.

A key component of this effort will involve appointing a private-sector expert, rumored to be a former CEO of a major telecommunications company, to spearhead the initiative.

President Dissanayake emphasized the need to replace outdated processes, stating, “We can no longer move forward with archaic systems. Whether it's buying a bus ticket or obtaining essential certificates, these tasks need to be streamlined for efficiency.”

The President highlighted that a primary goal of this initiative is to enable citizens to perform essential functions, such as paying taxes, from the comfort of their homes. The appointed expert will play a pivotal role in the forthcoming Digital Ministry and will also chair the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).

“This experienced individual is prepared to contribute to the digitalization of Sri Lanka on a voluntary basis, with duties expected to begin within the next one to two weeks,” Dissanayake noted. He also outlined a vision for enhancing government efficiency over the next three to four years.

Addressing potential skepticism, the President assured citizens of the National People’s Power (NPP) government’s commitment to this transformative journey, stating, “We will not deviate from this path, regardless of the challenges we may face.”

This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing Sri Lanka’s public services and promoting a more efficient and accessible government for all citizens.
