The 16th BRICS Summit will take place from October 22 to 24, 2024, in Kazan, Russia, marking a milestone as the first summit after BRICS' expansion to include five new members: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia.

Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and the new member countries will gather to discuss global economic stability, sustainable development, geopolitical dynamics, and technological innovation.

For Sri Lanka, the summit holds particular significance. Russian Ambassador Levan S. Dzhagaryan recently visited Sri Lanka and delivered an invitation to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to attend the event.

However, due to the parliamentary election, both Dissanayake and Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath will be unable to attend. Instead, Sri Lanka’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs will represent the country and formally request BRICS membership. Minister Herath has already sent letters to BRICS counterparts seeking support for Sri Lanka’s membership bid.
