President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that he has directed the Inspector General of Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch a formal inquiry into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. Speaking at a National People's Power rally in Katunayake yesterday (October 20), the President emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the tragic event.
He criticized efforts to suppress the investigation, mentioning an individual who tried to obstruct two reports produced during Ranil Wickremesinghe's presidency. “Those who exploited the 2019 Easter attacks for political gain have resurfaced after five years and are now demanding the release of those reports. Both reports were created under Ranil Wickremesinghe’s leadership and are not by investigative committees,” he said.
The President vowed that no attempts to derail the process would be successful, stressing the government's commitment to a transparent investigation. “We have nothing to hide, and no one will be protected,” he assured.
Meanwhile, former MP Udaya Gammanpila stated to the media yesterday that he plans to make the two reports public on Monday if President Anura Kumara Dissanayake does not release them before then.
