The Election Commission has announced that voters with disabilities will receive dedicated support to facilitate their participation in the Parliamentary Election scheduled for November 14, 2024.

According to the Commission, individuals who are totally or partially blind or have physical disabilities will be permitted to bring an assistant to help them mark their ballot papers.

This assistant must be at least 18 years old, not a candidate, and must not have any disabilities themselves. Additionally, they cannot be an authorized agent of a political candidate or involved in any election campaigning.

To utilize this assistance, voters are required to obtain a "certificate of eligibility," which can be collected from local Divisional Secretariats, Grama Niladhari Offices, or downloaded from the Election Commission’s website. This certificate must be presented at the polling station on Election Day.

The Commission emphasized the importance of both the voter and their assistant carrying valid identification documents, such as a National Identity Card, to ensure a smooth voting process. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and encourage inclusive participation in the electoral process for all citizens.
