The Department of Railways has announced the cancellation of all train services between Batticaloa and Colombo Fort today, October 17, following a serious accident involving a fuel transport train.

The collision occurred early this morning between the Minneriya and Higurakgoda railway stations when the train, traveling from the Kolonnawa petroleum storage terminal to Batticaloa, struck a herd of wild elephants. As a result of the impact, four fuel tanks were damaged, with two overturning.

Railway authorities are currently assessing the situation and working to clear the tracks, but no timeline has been provided for the resumption of services. Passengers are advised to seek alternative travel arrangements as six daily trains on this route have been suspended. Further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
