President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed the importance of improving the efficiency of road development projects to achieve rural economic development, according to the President's Media Division (PMD). He emphasized the need to simplify the procurement process for these projects to ensure that local communities benefit rather than concentrating on contracts among a few parties.

The President made these remarks during a progress review meeting for the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, held today (16 October) at the Presidential Secretariat, PMD reported. The discussion covered several ministry projects, with a special focus on the construction of the Kadawata-Mirigama section of the Central Expressway.

He highlighted that developing key infrastructure like ports, airports, and highways is vital for the country’s economic growth and noted that thoughtful planning could significantly boost the national economy. The President also called for attention to be given to the environmental, financial, and community impact of road development projects, urging timely and efficient completion while minimizing negative consequences.

Additionally, President Dissanayake directed officials to prioritize the safety of railway employees and the public in the ongoing railway line projects.

The meeting was attended by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, and other officials from related institutions.
