The US Ambassador stated that Sri Lanka is on the Right Path
She stressed the need for openness, transparency, and accountability from Sri Lanka’s leaders as these reforms progress. Reflecting on the recent elections, she highlighted that the Sri Lankan people have clearly voiced their desire for change through the ballot box. She urged the country's leaders, across government, business, academia, media, and civil society to take responsibility for realizing this vision.
Ambassador Chung underscored the critical role of business leaders in this transition, encouraging them to actively participate in promoting good governance and anti-corruption measures. She pointed out that their involvement is vital not only in providing goods and services but also in leading communities and shaping governance. Transparent trade practices, investment due diligence, and fair procurement reviews are essential, according to Chung, to ensure that projects benefit Sri Lankans and avoid adding to the country's debt burden.
Chung also highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka, built on mutual trust and shared values. She stated that the key to unlocking the full potential of US-Sri Lanka economic relations lies in Sri Lanka’s adherence to IMF reforms, the fight against corruption, and creating a stable and predictable governance system.
The ambassador concluded by expressing optimism for future collaborations, reiterating the United States’ commitment to building a prosperous future for both nations by working together through these challenging reforms.
