17th Environmental Pilot National Camp commenced

The annual celebrations of the environmental pilot program implemented by the Central Environment Authority in the Sri Lankan school system will begin today (15).

Arrangements have been made to hold this pilot project grandly at Maharagama - National Institute of Education premises till 18th.

The opening ceremony of this year's camp, where 350 environmental activists including environmental pilots will camp for 04 days, will be held on August 16 at 8:00 am by Mr. Prabhat Chandrakeerthy, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Tilaka Ranasinghe, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Chairman of the Central Environment Authority U. D. C. Mr. Jayalal, Acting Director General of Central Environment Authority Dr. Advocate R. M. S. K. Arrangements have been made to hold it under the chairmanship of Mr. Rathnayake and other dignitaries including officials of other public and private institutions.

With the noble objective of socializing future Sri Lankan citizens as environmentalists, the National Environmental Pilot Program is the wide environmental network implemented by the Central Environment Authority in the school system of the country with the support of the Ministry of Education.

This program, which started with a small group of 25 students in 1984, centered on Maligawatta New Town, Colombo, has now become a program implemented in many schools across the island. An environmental pilot who takes the initiative to protect Sri Lanka's environmental heritage through the National Environmental Pilot Program with the theme of "Protecting the Environment - Save the Environment" should participate in many environmental activities and go through the process of obtaining 05 medals.

About 350 people, including 250 gold medal winning eco-pilots from 75 schools who showed special skills, are going to participate in this program. Environmental pilot students from 18 districts belonging to 9 provinces of Sri Lanka are working in this four-day camp keeping in mind the common goal of protecting the environment.

For the environmental pilot program, the company conducted an environmental pilot camp for the first time in 1998 at the Randenigala Wildlife Training Center. After the environmental pilot camps that were started in this way, camps were held annually and this year the 17th environmental pilot camp is being held.

This program is organized by the Environmental Education and Awareness Division of the Central Environment Authority so that the theoretical knowledge gained about the environment at the Environmental Pilot School can be practically experienced for 04 days.
