Tissa police are alleged to have assaulted a bus conductor, Vitharana Hettiarachchige Amil Maduranga (23), on suspicion of ATM card theft and fraud. The assault reportedly occurred both publicly and later at the police station.
Maduranga was released after it was confirmed he was not involved in the crime.
Tharanga L Oatabendi, Coordinator of the Hambantota Human Rights First Aid Centre, condemned the police conduct and stated that complaints would be filed with the Human Rights Commission and other relevant bodies. Maduranga is currently receiving treatment at Hambantota General Hospital.
