A lawyer is facing indictment in the Anuradhapura High Court on five counts related to forged documents. The Attorney General has charged him with producing falsified documents to gain entry to Law College, obtain a national identity card, and secure a passport.
The case, overseen by Judge P.M. Tilakratne from the North Central Province Court of Appeal, was reassigned following a request from Anuradhapura High Court Judge Viraj Ranathunga, due to the accused's connections with the local legal community.
The accused's legitimate birth certificate lists his date of birth as June 17, 1980, while a forged certificate claims January 29, 1983. Investigations revealed discrepancies, including two different names and multiple identity cards. The accused used the forged birth certificate for Law College admission and passport application, which he used for international travel.
The Anuradhapura Crime Investigation Branch conducted the inquiry based on a complaint from Civil Engineer Namal Surendra Wickremesinghe of Hidogama. Following non-summary proceedings in the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court, the Attorney General filed indictments against the accused.
