Election Operation Rooms will be established at all police stations and divisional police areas in preparation for the upcoming presidential election, according to police officials.

Acting Police Spokesman DIG Ruwan Gunasekera announced that the police officers in charge of each division and the senior DIG in the area will oversee the operation rooms once they are set up. These rooms will handle complaints related to election violence and violations of election laws.

Additionally, a specialized police unit has been established at Police Headquarters to manage election-related matters. This unit, which is currently operational under an Officer-in-Charge (OIC), is supervised by a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

It has been reported that Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Asanga Karavita, along with another DIG and an SSP, have been assigned to oversee the presidential election duties. SDIG Karavita is responsible for coordinating with the Election Commission regarding election activities, while an SSP has been appointed to handle coordination at the district level.

Despite the absence of an Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Election Commission has the authority, under the Constitution, to issue directives to the police once an election is officially declared.
