The police constable in the video circulated on social media, in which he allegedly tried to arrest a group of youths by placing cannabis inside a car during a traffic check, has been interdicted.

The police launched an investigation into the incident after a video went viral on social media, showing a group of youths accusing police officers on road duty of planting cannabis in their car on July 24 in Kollupitiya.

It was reported that a group of police officers stopped the car, which had arrived from the Grand Pass area, with about five men inside.

In the video, the youths alleged that a police officer tried to place cannabis inside the car to extort money after seeing a sum of cash in the vehicle.

A police constable attached to the Kollupitiya Police has been interdicted following an inquiry by SSP Ravindra Ambepitiya, who is in charge of Colombo (South).

The constable has been interdicted on several charges, including betel chewing while wearing his uniform, checking the vehicle without the driver or any other person present, and acting without an assistant officer.

The Kollupitiya Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
