Sajith Premadasa demands President Ranil resign

In a contentious address to Parliament today, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign if he fails to appoint an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) as mandated by a recent Supreme Court order.

Premadasa emphasized that it is imperative for the President to comply with the Supreme Court's injunction, which requires the appointment of an Acting IGP in the absence of a permanent IGP.

“The President cannot evade this issue,” Premadasa asserted. “His duties as President persist even if he is a presidential candidate. It is his responsibility to appoint an Acting IGP when the position is vacant.”

He further challenged, “If the President cannot fulfill this duty, he should resign. An Acting President could then ensure that the law is upheld. The current situation reflects an attempt to engage in unconstitutional actions.”
