A detainee remanded in Dumbara Prison on murder charges assaulted two prison officials, causing serious injuries while being transported to Batticaloa courts for another case.
Prisons Spokesman said that the injured officers were admitted to the National Hospital in Kandy.
The incident occurred while the prisoner was being transported from Dumbara Prison to Batticaloa along the Mahiyangana Road. During the journey, he became aggressive and assaulted both the jailor and a jail guard. Consequently, the prison bus returned to Dumbara Prison, and the injured officers were taken to the hospital.
The prisoner was later transported to the Batticaloa courts under enhanced security.
