Paris Olympic Games to provide 200,000 condoms for athletes

Organizers of the upcoming Paris Olympic Games have taken proactive measures to ensure athletes can practice safe sex. A total of 200,000 condoms, along with other contraceptive resources, will be supplied to athletes on arrival at the Olympic Village.

Around 10,500 global sports stars will gather in the French capital to partake in the competition from July 26 to Aug. 11. The accommodations costing nearly $2.2 billion are located in Saint-Denis, stepstone away from the event's main host venue at the Stade de France.

In an attempt to promote safety, organizers will provide 200,000 condoms, 20,000 female condoms, and 10,000 dental dams - 33 percent more than what was available during London 2012. Along with these measures, STD clinics will also operate in the Olympic Village throughout the contest

A comparison shows a considerable increase in the contraceptive provisions - Seoul 1998 provided only 8,500 condoms, while Sydney 2000 required a total of 90,000, which was more than initially planned as supplies of 70,000 ran low.

Past Olympians acknowledged intimate encounters are common during such intense athletic gatherings. Tony Azevedo, former USA water polo captain, once noted: "It's like the first day of college. You're nervous, super excited. Everyone's meeting people and trying to hook up with someone."

Hope Solo, the former USA women's soccer goalkeeper, revealed the steamy side of the Olympics, admitting: "There's a lot of sex going on. I've seen people having sex right out in the open. On the grass, between buildings, people getting down and dirty."

Laurent Michaud, the Olympic Village director, emphasized the importance of a welcoming atmosphere at the Games, telling Sky News: "It is very important that the conviviality here is something big. Working with the athletes commission, we wanted to create some places where the athletes would feel very enthusiastic and comfortable."
