The Election Commission (EC) has responded to potential violations of election laws by issuing directives this week.
Following complaints, the EC instructed the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment to halt ‘awareness programmes’ organized by women development officers at the Divisional Secretariat level, funded by the Presidential Secretariat. The decision came amidst concerns that these programmes, involving 500 women per division across 360 divisions, could influence elections.
In addition, the EC sought an explanation from the Ministry of Public Administration regarding the sudden transfer of Anuradhapura District Secretary Janaka Jayasundera, suspecting political influence in the process.
