A foreign couple attempting to smuggle gems worth millions of rupees out of the country was arrested by AASL security at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning.
A senior female security officer from Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited searched the baggage of the Japanese nationals at the Departure Terminal, discovering a small pouch containing various precious stones.
The couple failed to declare or explain the gems. After preliminary inquiries, they were handed over to Sri Lanka Customs for further investigation.
The exact quantity and valuation of the gems will be determined by Customs officials.
