The Supreme Court has dismissed a Fundamental Rights petition filed by a lawyer challenging the holding of the Presidential Election without a referendum on the 19th amendment to the Constitution. The three-judge bench, comprised of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Arjuna Obeysekera, and Justice Priyantha Fernando, ruled that the petition lacked merit and imposed a Rs.500,000 cost on the petitioner.
Attorney-at-law Aruna Laksiri had argued in his petition that the 19th amendment to the constitution, which affects the conditions under which a Presidential Election can be held, was not properly passed with a referendum.
The court ordered the petitioner to pay the imposed cost before July 31 this year.
