New insurance scheme for Sri Lanka's school rugby

In an unprecedented move, a special insurance scheme has been introduced for Sri Lanka’s schoolboy rugby players, thanks to an initiative by Minister of Sports Harin Fernando. The scheme will cover under-16 and under-19 rugby players, as revealed by Sports Ministry sources today.
The Sports Ministry collaborated with the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation to establish this special insurance plan, providing much-needed coverage for young athletes. The official ceremony marking this milestone was held at the Havelock Sports Club, attended by Minister Fernando and Professor Shemal Fernando, Director General of the Sports Development Department.
During the event, LKR 5 million was presented to the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Association to enhance the standards of refereeing in the country. Additionally, the Henry Pedris Stadium was officially handed over to Isipathana College, further supporting the development of school sports infrastructure.
In a gesture of support for injured players, H.I.C. de Zoysa from St. Joseph’s College, who sustained an injury last season, was awarded LKR 1 million. This initiative underscores the Sports Ministry's commitment to the well-being and advancement of schoolboy rugby in Sri Lanka.
