Public Security Minister Tiran Alas has strongly criticized senior police officers, including Western Province (South) Deputy Inspector General of Police Gayantha Marapana, for interrogating the owner of a tattoo studio in front of the media.
A video shows DIG Marapana and other senior officers questioning the tattoo studio owner in Athurugiriya, where a shooting had occurred.
The Public Security Ministry reported that DIG Marapana has expressed regret to Minister Alas and promised that such incidents will not happen in the future.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon issued a new circular instructing all police officers not to broadcast statements made by suspects to the media.
