Sri Lanka is gearing up to bolster its educational offerings by recruiting 500 foreign language teachers, focusing on languages crucial for international employment opportunities, State Minister of Education Aravindh Kumar announced on Friday.
The initiative, aimed at enhancing students' proficiency in global languages, will prioritize the teaching of Korean, German, French, Hindi, Chinese, and Japanese, Minister Kumar revealed during a press briefing.
"In March, I emphasized the importance of introducing foreign language education, particularly in Japanese and Korean, to prepare our graduates for lucrative employment prospects abroad," stated Minister Kumar. Sri Lanka has been actively sending workers to South Korea, with approximately 10,000 placements recorded as of June 2024. Additionally, plans are underway to dispatch around 6,000 workers to Japan, highlighting the increasing demand for language proficiency among job applicants seeking opportunities in these countries.
To qualify for employment in South Korea and Japan, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the respective languages through standardized proficiency tests.
The recruitment of foreign language teachers is part of Sri Lanka's broader strategy to equip its youth with essential skills for global employment markets, ensuring they are well-prepared to seize international opportunities.
