President Ranil Wickremesinghe inaugurated the new flyover connecting Kompanna Veediya and Justice Akbar Mawatha today, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).
The ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Transport and Highways.
The construction of the flyover, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the busy commercial area of Kompanna Veediya, is expected to be completed by September.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 5.27 billion, the PMD reported.
Kompanna Veediya is a bustling commercial hub housing various institutions, including government offices, hospitals, religious sites, restaurants, and movie theatres. The area has faced significant delays due to the railway crossing, with commuters reportedly losing up to three hours daily.
To address this issue, the Road Development Authority has partnered with Maga Engineering Company to carry out the construction of the flyover, which is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow in the area.
