The Kataragama Esala Festival, also known as the Kataragama Perahera is a significant religious and cultural event held annually in the town of Kataragama in Sri Lanka

It is one of the most important festivals in the country, attracting thousands of devotees and visitors from all over Sri Lanka and beyond.

The festival takes place in the month of July or August and lasts for several weeks. It is dedicated to the worship of Lord Kataragama, a Hindu deity widely revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.

The origins of the festival can be traced back to ancient times and have evolved to include elements from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

The Esala Festival will feature a series of vibrant processions, culminating in the grand Water Cutting ceremony on July 22, 2024, at  the Kataragama Menik River.

Special processions in coming days:

July 11 : Alms Giving at Basnayaka Walawwa, Renewal of the Shelter (Athupandalama) in front of the Maha Dewale, and the Basnayaka Nilamema begins walking in the procession according to ritual, followed by the Sixth Procession.


July 18 : Fire Walking Ceremony, followed by the Thirteenth Procession.

July 21 :Final procession Magul Perahera 

July 22 : The grand Water Cutting Ceremony at the Jeevamali Ferry on the Kataragama Menik River, marking the conclusion of the festival.
