A tense situation was reported this morning (July 5) in front of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s (SLFP) Headquarters on Darley Road, Colombo 10, following the arrival of MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.

The MP announced his intention to recommence his duties as the General Secretary of the SLFP, asserting his claim to the position.

Jayasekara extended an open invitation to party members and supporters to join him as he resumed his official duties, emphasizing that he remains the legitimate General Secretary of the party.

In response, SLFP’s Senior Vice Chairman, Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa, stated that the party will accept Jayasekara as the General Secretary. Prof. Piyadasa also mentioned that the SLFP plans to nominate a candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election.

However, MP Mahinda Amaraweera expressed a differing view, arguing that nominating a presidential candidate solely from the SLFP is futile. He suggested that a candidate supported by the SLFP would be more likely to secure a victory.
