The Maligakanda Magistrate Manjula Thilakaratne has granted permission to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to subpoena the records of 19 accounts belonging to Piumi Hansamali, following allegations that Hansamali acquired substantial property through organized crime.
These accounts are held across eight leading banks in the country. The investigation focuses on allegations that Hansamali acquired significant assets, including a Range Rover valued at 800,000 rupees and a residential property worth 148 million rupees in Colombo, through organized crime activities conducted in a clandestine manner.
The request for the subpoena was initiated by the CID's Illegal Assets Investigation Division. This action follows a complaint filed by Sanjay Mahawatta, chairman of the organization 'Magen Ratata'. Chief Inspector Sampath Rajakaruna and Deputy Inspector Tharanga Lakmal of the Illegal Assets Investigation Division presented the details of the case to the court.
The investigation is aimed at uncovering the source of funds deposited into Hansamali's multiple bank accounts over a short period, suspected to be connected to illicit earnings.
