Constitutional Council delays approval for AG's tenure extension

The Constitutional Council convened yesterday to discuss President's recommendation for extending Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam's tenure by six months. However, the decision was deferred for further deliberation.

Rajaratnam's current term ends this month, with the President proposing an additional six-month extension. Yet, the proposal necessitates approval from the Constitutional Council, which has been postponed.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana announced the Council's reconvening on the 18th of this month. A final decision on Rajaratnam's service extension is anticipated during this session.
