In a bid to expedite progress amidst ongoing delays and environmental concerns, the Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Ministry has announced plans to fast-track the transformation of the Port of Galle into a tourist hub.

The decision was made during a special meeting convened by the Ministry to address the sluggish pace of construction and ineffective measures regarding environmental and wildlife issues.

The ambitious plans involve the creation of two backwaters, spanning 850m and 150m respectively, along with dredging the harbour basin to a depth of 12.05m. Additionally, a new passenger terminal is slated for construction to accommodate the anticipated influx of tourists.

Acknowledging the paramount importance of environmental considerations, it was proposed during the meeting that the Wildlife Department swiftly submits an Environmental Impact Assessment Report within a week. This report aims to comprehensively address all environmental concerns and ensure the smooth progression of the development program at the Port of Galle.

Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has instructed officials of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to initiate the solicitation of Requests for Interest from both local and foreign investors keen on contributing to the project. This move is contingent upon the submission and review of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report.

Highlighting the financial commitment to the project, the Ministry has earmarked a substantial sum of USD 200 million to be allocated by the SLPA for the development program at the Port of Galle.
