Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, has announced that the new Bill on electricity sector reforms will be gazetted within the next two weeks.
Speaking via X (formerly Twitter), Wijesekera revealed that the certification to proceed with the new draft bill was issued by the Attorney General last Monday after thorough review.
The Energy Minister emphasized that the upcoming bill will be presented to Parliament during the last week of April. He further highlighted that stakeholders and interested individuals will have at least two weeks to review the gazetted Bill, followed by an additional two weeks from the day of its presentation to Parliament to challenge its legality.
Wijesekera noted that the draft Bill, which was initially gazetted in December by the Legal Draftsman’s Department, has undergone revisions based on suggestions and issues raised by development agencies and stakeholders. Additionally, inconsistencies in the Sinhala and Tamil translations have been addressed.
The progress of the electricity sector reforms was recently reviewed by Minister Wijesekera at the Ministry of Power and Energy, alongside officials from the Reforms Secretariat, during a meeting held on Thursday, the 28th.
