Police are conducting investigations into the suspicious death of Gamini Jayasinghe (46), the owner of a tourist hotel in Uvakarandagolla, Ella, who succumbed to serious burn injuries on March 12 at Badulla Hospital. One of his companions has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The deceased, Gamini Jayasinghe, had been undergoing treatment at Badulla Hospital for about a week before his death. He is survived by his wife, a police sergeant residing in Bandarawela, who is caring for their three daughters.
The 45-year-old suspect, a resident of Uvakarandagolla in Ella and a father of three, was a close confidante of the deceased. During interrogation, the suspect admitted his involvement in the killing, claiming that the hotel owner had been having an illicit relationship with his wife and had ignored repeated requests to end it.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had thrown petrol on the hotel owner and set him on fire.
The suspect, who suffered burn injuries on his lower and upper limbs and face, fled from home and hid in Rawanaella Forest Reserve. After changing his clothes, he traveled by train to Nawalapitiya and sought refuge at his sister-in-law's house. About a week later, he returned to Uvakarandagolla, where he was apprehended by the police.
Acting Magistrate Seneviratne Weerasinghe from Bandarawela visited the scene and the hospital, conducting a preliminary magisterial inquiry. Dr. W.A.C. Lakmali, the JMO at Badulla General Hospital who conducted the postmortem examination, reported that the cause of death was serious burn injuries.
The police suspect that the hotel owner's clandestine relationship with the suspect's wife led to the fatal confrontation.
