Thirty-three individuals were arrested during a protest staged by the ‘Jana Aragala Viyaparaya’ in Pettah today.
Among those arrested are Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) activist Duminda Nagamuwa and youth activist Lahiru Weerasekara.
Police said that at least five police officers were injured during clashes with protesters.
Earlier, authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters in Pettah, Colombo.
The demonstration, organized by the ‘Jana Aragala Viyaparaya’ (People’s Struggle Movement), addressed issues such as the rising cost of living and certain foreign agreements.
The protest march began near the Fort Railway Station and headed towards Pettah before riot police intervened with tear gas and water cannons.
