Three members of underworld gangs were arrested during a special operation launched yesterday to crack down on organized criminal activities.
As part of this operation, 20 special police teams have been deployed to crackdown on the identified underworld gangs.
Police said that a member of the organized criminal gang associated with 'Keselwatta Dinuka' was arrested by a special team led by Inspector Attanayake in Borella yesterday evening. The arrested suspect, Tharidu Ruwan Kumara, was found in possession of 6,550mg of heroin and has been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division.
Furthermore, another member of the underworld gang 'Kanjipana Imran' was arrested with 6,400 mg of heroin by the Organized Crime Squad led by IP Pradeep Ediriweera. The arrested suspect, Ahmed Jifri Ahmed Rizwan alias Goda Rizwan, a resident of Maligawatta, has been taken into custody.
In addition, the police arrested another underworld criminal from 'Pukudu Kanna's gang at Kajima Garden Stadium with 6,620mg of ice drug.
In response to a concerning increase in organized criminal activities in the Western and Southern provinces, a special operation targeting 20 identified organized criminal gangs in the country was launched under the 'Yukthiya' initiative yesterday.
The specialized teams from the Police and STF will target 20 identified organized criminal gangs operating primarily in the Southern and Western Provinces. Their focus will be to crackdown on underworld figures responsible for innocent deaths," he said.
These 20 newly established teams will target each underworld group currently operating, with each team consisting of 9 members, including a Crime OIC, 4 intelligence officers, and 2 Special Task Force officers.
