The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has cautioned Sri Lankan fisherfolk against engaging in poaching activities in the Arabian Sea.
This advisory follows reports of an armed Somali group hijacking an Iranian fishing vessel in the same area.
The Sri Lankan Navy said that the international sea area 700 nautical miles east of the Somali Sea region carries a high risk of piracy.
Considering this threat, the Department advises multi-day fishing vessels to operate east of the Arabian Sea, away from the identified high-risk zone.
