Transport and Highways Minister Bandula Gunawardana announced the government's intention to finalize the construction of the third phase of the Central Expressway, spanning from Pothuhera to Galagedara, by July 2026, with an initial completion target set for 2025.
The minister made this declaration during an extensive inspection tour of the ongoing construction along the route. Minister Gunawardana's visit encompassed a stop at the project office situated in the Lihinigiriya area of Pothuhera, where he participated in a detailed presentation on the project's current progress. Key officials overseeing the project and representatives from construction companies were present during the presentation.
Spanning a total distance of 32.45 kilometers, the third phase of the Central Expressway boasts four crucial interchanges: Pothuhera, Polgahawela, Rambukkana, and Galagedara. Construction activities related to these interchanges are presently underway.
During the inspection, Minister Gunawardana seized the opportunity to elucidate on the prevailing economic conditions in the country and the government's economic agenda. He emphasized the necessity of adhering to agreements established with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), highlighting the imperative for all ongoing projects to be brought to fruition within set parameters.
"It is not viable to continue acquiring loans indiscriminately as previously practiced. Our construction endeavors are being conducted in strict accordance with IMF agreements. It is imperative that all projects within the country are completed," Minister Gunawardana underscored.
Local construction companies have already commenced work across 17 contract packages for this particular phase extending from Pothuhera to Rambukkana.
