The Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) has denied a request from insurance agents representing the shipping company of the X-Press Pearl vessel to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the government seeking compensation. The insurance agents argued that the case should be thrown out because a London court had already set a limit on the compensation for damages caused by the vessel.
However, the SICC rejected this request and instructed the insurance companies to file formal objections by the 24th of March. The case is set to resume on the 1st of July. In the interim, the insurance agents of the shipping company have been granted the opportunity to submit counter-objections to the Attorney-General's objections filed before the British High Court of Admiralty regarding the compensation restrictions related to the fire and sinking of the X-Press Pearl vessel.
The Attorney General's Department has stated that the insurance agents have until the 24th of May to respond. It's worth noting that the British High Court of Admiralty had previously issued an order limiting the government's compensation from the shipping company to 19.5 million Sterling Pounds. The Sri Lankan government filed objections against this order on the 29th of January.
