The Colombo High Court dismissed former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella's preliminary objections regarding the GI Pipes Case today. Judge Nawaratne Marasinghe scheduled the case for trial, with proceedings set to resume on April 4.
Indictments were filed by the Bribery Commission in the Colombo High Court against Rambukwella and two others for allegedly causing unlawful loss to the government through the purchase of GI pipes using funds from the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) during the 2015 Presidential Election, during Rambukwella's tenure as Minister of Mass Media.
Rambukwella had challenged the maintainability of the case with preliminary objections. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed indictments under section 70 of the Bribery Act against Rambukwella, former SLRC Director General Chandrapala Liyanage, and former SLRC Chairman Wimal Rubasinghe.
The Bribery Commission alleged that the three accused caused a loss of Rs. 990,000 to the SLRC by unnecessarily purchasing 600 GI pipes around December 2, 2014.
