The Police Special Task Force reported the discovery of seven unexploded 81 mm mortar shells at Vavuniya Madukanda National School grounds yesterday evening.
These mortar shells were uncovered underground during a cleanup operation of a garbage area, using a backhoe.
These explosives, used during the final stages of the war, were badly decomposed.
Under the directive of the Vavuniya Magistrate's Court, the mortar shells were unearthed for neutralization after safe removal.
Further investigations are underway by Vavuniya Police, Madukanda Police and Special Task Force officers.
