Muslims across Sri Lanka are set to commence the holy month of Ramadan, beginning their fasting from dawn on Tuesday, March 12th, as announced by the Colombo Grand Mosque.
The sighting of the new crescent moon marks the official start of Ramadan, a period of fasting and prayer observed by Muslims worldwide.
During Ramadan, adherents abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset, as a spiritual discipline to commemorate the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed on the sacred night of “Laylat Al Qadr.” This observance of fasting during Ramadan is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam, representing a fundamental tenet of the faith.
As Muslims embark on this month-long journey of spiritual reflection, communities come together in acts of worship, charity, and communal meals, fostering a sense of unity and devotion among believers.
Ramadan holds profound significance in the Islamic calendar, serving as a time for self-discipline, prayer, and seeking closeness to Allah.
