Tragedy struck at the Thirukkovil Methodist Central College as a 16-year-old schoolboy, identified as Vidurshan, collapsed while participating in a marathon race during the inter-house sports meet held at the school premises this morning.
Vidurshan was rushed to Tirukkovil Hospital for immediate treatment after collapsing during the event, said.
However, due to the severity of his condition, he was transferred to Akkaraipattu Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said a tense situation was prevailed at Tirukkovil Hospital as parents and fellow students protested, alleging inadequate treatment for the ailing student.
The situation turned violent, with individuals resorting to pelting stones at the hospital.
Police and the Special Task Force (STF), intervened to diffuse the situation and maintain order.
Further investigations into Vidurshan’s untimely death are underway, led by a team of officers from the Thirukkovil Police.
