President Ranil Wickremesinghe revealed encouraging statistics to Parliament on Wednesday, indicating a notable resurgence in Sri Lanka's economic landscape. Wickremesinghe noted that 1,995 new companies were established in January 2024, supplementing the 4,500 companies registered in 2023, as the nation emerged from a recent economic crisis.
"The revival of the economy has spurred the establishment of new ventures," Wickremesinghe emphasized during his address to Parliament. He elaborated on the escalating trend, citing figures from the Company Registrar that showcased a significant increase in company registrations over the past years. In 2022, the registrar recorded 17,819 new company registrations, a figure that surged to 22,376 in 2023. The momentum continued into January 2024, with an additional 1,995 new companies being registered.
Furthermore, Wickremesinghe underscored his commitment to national reconstruction, emphasizing that his current endeavors were geared towards the country's development rather than personal power accumulation. He pointed to several economic indicators, including the rise in domestic tourism, as evidence of the progress being made in revitalizing the nation's economy.
