Sri Lanka has been extended an invitation to become a member of the inaugural International Counter Ransomware Initiative, spearheaded by the United States in 2021. The initiative aims to establish a collaborative platform among countries worldwide to combat the scourge of ransomware attacks.
According to the Government Information Department, 48 countries spanning the globe, including the European Union and the International Police (Interpol), have already pledged their participation in the initiative.
Given the recent challenges Sri Lanka has encountered due to ransomware attacks, the government acknowledges the potential benefits of aligning with the International Counter Ransomware Initiative. Recognizing the urgent need for international cooperation in combating cyber threats, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for Sri Lanka's participation in the initiative.
The joint proposal, presented by the President in his capacities as the Minister of Technology and Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms, has received unanimous support, signaling the government's commitment to addressing cybersecurity concerns effectively.
Sri Lanka's decision to join the International Counter Ransomware Initiative reflects its determination to bolster cybersecurity measures and collaborate with the global community in combating cyber threats, ensuring the safety and security of its digital infrastructure and citizens.
