Sri Lanka has reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of its first semi-transparent solar photovoltaic (PV) powered agrivoltaic pilot project located in Hanthana, Kandy.
The project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), marks a pioneering step towards integrating renewable energy solutions into agricultural landscapes.
Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera highlighted the importance of the initiative, emphasizing its collaborative nature involving key stakeholders such as the Plantation Industries Ministry, Power & Energy Ministry, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Tea Small Holders Development Authority, and Sustainable Energy Authority.
The primary objective of the pilot project is to explore the feasibility and potential benefits of deploying renewable energy technologies within tea plantations.
The implementation of agrivoltaic systems holds promise for enhancing energy sustainability, reducing carbon emissions, and mitigating environmental impact in the agricultural sector.
