Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, delivered a compelling message on the urgency of addressing climate change and promoting regional stability during his participation at the 60th edition of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Germany.
At a panel discussion titled "Protecting Global Commons," Minister Sabry underscored the multifaceted approach needed to tackle climate change, emphasizing the importance of knowledge sharing and capacity building alongside financial considerations. He highlighted Sri Lanka's proposal to establish a Climate Change University and highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on countries in the global south.
Joining him on the panel were Ricarda Lang, co-chair of Germany's Alliance 90/The Greens party, and Mads Flarup, Executive Director of Greenpeace, providing a diverse perspective on environmental challenges.
Furthermore, Minister Sabry reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitments to climate action, including participation in COP28 and regional initiatives, emphasizing the nation's dedication to protecting global resources.
In another panel discussion on "Shoring up Defences: Security in the Indo-Pacific," Minister Sabry stressed the importance of open communication channels, confidence-building measures, and continuous dialogue to ensure stability and peace in the region. He was accompanied by notable panelists including Lars Klingbeil from Germany's Social Democratic Party, Senator Ben Cardin from the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and Fu Ying from Tsinghua University, representing China.
Minister Sabry also utilized the conference to engage in bilateral meetings, furthering diplomatic ties and collaboration on key global issues.
