In a significant development for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community in Sri Lanka, a delegation of community representatives engaged in discussions with the Speaker of the Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, on Monday (12).
The primary focus of the meeting was to address the implications of the Private Member Bill introduced by Member of Parliament Premnath C. Dolawatte, aimed at amending Sections 365 and 365A of the Penal Code of Sri Lanka. The bill seeks legislative changes pertinent to the rights and protections of the LGBTIQ+ community within the country, as disclosed by the Parliamentary Communications Department in a statement.
During the session, the LGBTIQ+ community representatives articulated their concerns and challenges faced by the community in Sri Lanka, engaging in extensive dialogue with the Speaker. The meeting provided a platform to underscore the importance of recognizing and safeguarding the rights of all citizens, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The organization Meet by NextGenSL, a bipartisan youth entity, played a pivotal role in facilitating the dialogue between the LGBTIQ+ representatives and the Speaker of the Parliament. Assistant Secretary General of Parliament, Hansa Abeyratne, was also present during the discussions, underscoring the institutional support for constructive engagement on matters of social inclusion and equality within Sri Lanka.
