In a concerted effort to fortify Sri Lanka's anti-corruption framework, the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have inaugurated a groundbreaking project aimed at bolstering the country's resilience and promoting economic governance.
The initiative, titled 'The Project for Promoting Economic Governance through Anti-corruption Policy Support', seeks to address deep-rooted transparency and accountability gaps exacerbating the nation's ongoing socio-economic crisis.
The official launch ceremony, held in Colombo today (Feb. 13), witnessed the signing of the project agreement by Hideaki Mizukoshi, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and Ms. Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative of UNDP Sri Lanka. Senior government officials were also present to commemorate the occasion, underlining the project's significance in combating corruption and fostering sustainable development.
The project, supported by the Government of Japan through the Japanese Supplementary Budget (JSB) amounting to 137 million JPY (approximately 931,000 USD), signifies a resolute commitment to advancing Sri Lanka's economic governance and anti-corruption endeavors. Key objectives of the initiative include:
1. Strengthening legal and policy frameworks to combat corruption.
2. Enhancing coordination among institutions combating financial and tax crimes.
3. Building strategic institutional and individual capacities to combat corruption effectively.
Highlighting Japan's unwavering support, Ambassador Hideaki Mizukoshi emphasized the pivotal role of anti-corruption measures in fostering a business-friendly environment conducive to foreign investment. He underscored Japan's dedication to promoting fair economic governance in Sri Lanka and expressed optimism about the transformative impact of collective efforts in combating corruption.
The project's targeted interventions aim to instill a comprehensive approach to corruption prevention, investigation, and prosecution, thereby facilitating efficient and predictable public service delivery. Upholding the rule of law and fostering an environment of transparency and accountability are integral to attracting foreign direct investment critical for Sri Lanka's socio-economic recovery.
Through strategic capacity development initiatives, the project endeavors to equip Sri Lanka with the tools and resources necessary to combat corruption effectively, paving the way for sustainable growth and resilience in the face of economic challenges.
