The Ministry of Information Technology has confirmed discussions with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to set up a branch in Kandy, Sri Lanka's central city.
The initiative aims to accelerate the nation's digital economy, with State Minister of Technology, Kanaka Herath, leading a delegation to IIT Madras for talks last week.
According to the IT Ministry, the delegation, comprising esteemed academics and industry leaders, sought to identify potential collaborations and finalize plans for the proposed campus. This move aligns with recommendations from the International Monetary Fund, urging the government to leverage digitalization as a means to combat corruption.
Government officials have emphasized key strategies, including the implementation of electronic National Identity Cards (e-NIC), Unique ID cards with biometrics, and the digitization of payment systems, including tax transactions, as pivotal steps towards advancing the digital economy agenda.
