Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called upon the government to enact substantial reductions in electricity tariffs following an analysis of data conducted by Verité Research and the Committee on Public Finance.
Premadasa highlighted the findings, which indicate that electricity tariffs in Sri Lanka are notably higher compared to other South Asian countries.
Addressing parliament, the Opposition Leader underscored that Sri Lankan citizens are burdened with paying approximately 2.5 to 3 times more for electricity than their counterparts in neighboring nations. He expressed concern over the series of recent tariff hikes imposed by the government, emphasizing the adverse impact on consumers, the general public, as well as the industrial and business sectors.
Premadasa criticized the government's purported plan to reduce electricity tariffs by a mere 4 percent, deeming it inadequate.
He urged the authorities to implement a substantial reduction in tariffs to alleviate the financial strain on citizens and foster economic stability.
